Prom Night
In the United States, a prom is a formal dance held at the end of the last years of high school, called Junior Prom and Senior Prom respectively.
Curiosity: In American high schools, each of the four classes ______ a particular name. A student in the first year of high school is a “freshman”, in the 2nd year, a “sophomore”,, in the 3rd year, a “junior” and in the fourth year, a “senior”.
Boys are usually dressed in tuxedos with bowties. Girls usually wear formal gowns or dresses adorned with a corsage given to them by their dates.
Some girls spend months planning and looking for the perfect prom dress: for them, it is a childhood dream, and they spare no efforts – or money- to make it come true.
At the Prom, there is usually the election of the prom queen and king. Typically, all students get together and nominate 6 candidates in a general election, where anyone can take part. The final vote happens a week before the prom, and the results are usually a big sensation, announced at the end of the prom night. King and Queen are usually chosen based on their popularity.
The Prom Night is the most romantic night of their lives. Many students take a limousine to their proms. Parents and teachers are chaperones, who try to prevent the occurrence of violence, alcohol abuse and other sorts of inappropriate behavior.
